St Barths is a unique private flight destination

St Barth’s boasts a range of luxury boutique accommodation, diverse culinary experiences, vibrant social gatherings and stunning beaches. Guests on island will experience a blend of European elegance and the famous laid back lifestyle of the Caribbean that keeps them coming back. Private flights to St Barths are accommodated through the Gustaf III Airport located next to the town of St Jean.

Sustained growth of visitor arrivals for St Barth

St Barth has been experiencing significant growth in air traffic since the lows of the pandemic. In 2020, 119,039 passengers traversed the Gustaf III Airport but passenger numbers have rebounded strongly and hit a record high of 218,917 passengers in 2022 which was broken again in 2025 when the total number of passengers reached 232,269. In terms of aircraft movements, St Barth’s recorded 47,805 in 2025 which represented an increase of 11.8% compared to 2024, with a significant portion of these being private flights. This growth is leading to persistent saturation of the airport’s ground facilities and airspace which puts additional pressure on infrastructure and operational services and can begin to erode safety and passenger experience.

St Barth airport capacity challenges & solutions

Gustaf III Airport also happens to be one of the smallest airport footprints in the region which includes one of the shortest runways in the world to accommodate private flights. The Winter 2025/2026 season was the first time St Barth implemented an airport coordination system to manage the capacity challenge. A slot facilitation service was the solution deployed to maintain a viable airport and air transport operation. An airport slot is granted for each planned aircraft operation on a specific date and time with a limitation to the amount of activity allowed within a period of time. This mechanism was mainly utilized during two peak tourism periods: November 15, 2025, to January 15, 2026 and from March 7 to March 15, 2026.

Airport coordination is prevalent in Europe

For over 30years slots have been utilized within Europe to assist with airports requiring capacity management efforts such as Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, Cannes Airport, Palma de Mallorca and even in metropolitans such as London Luton Airport.

The goal remains to improve the safety and efficiency of all flights at St Barth Airport through better scheduling and capacity management.
